BritishTheatre.com caught up with Lorna Luft recently to talk about her current tour with The Judy Garland Songbook asking what audiences might expect from the tour.
The Judy Garland Songbook has given Lorna Luft, Garland’s daughter the opportunity to revisit her mother’s legacy through her songs and what a catalogue of songs it is.
“It’s all of her songbook, these are songs that nearly every person knows and they are going to have the experience of being able to remember where they were and what there doing when they first heard these songs.” Lorna said.
Judy Garland's career spanned some 40 years as a film actress, vaudevillian, recording artist and concert performer. During that time she appeared in over two dozen films with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Mikey Rooney, some of which would go on to become beloved favourites including The Wizard Of Oz. “Audiences will hear everything from Meet Me In St Louis to A Star Is Born to some of her early films, you’ll hear every single famous song that she ever sang”.
“A show like this has never really been done. It’s celebrating her music catalogue.”
Lorna is joined on stage by X Factor finalist and Dancing On Ice star Ray Quinn and West End performer and star of Wicked Louise Dearman.
“We have an amazing cast, Louise is extraordinary and Ray is fantastic and the dancers are just sensational.
It’s wonderful to see them being bought back and to watch a group of incredible young performers, sing these songs with all their heart and soul and sing the lyrics from some of the world’s greatest lyricists. It’s just an absolute joy for me.”
The Judy Garland Songbook is under the creative directorship of award-winning choreographer and director Arlene Phillips.
“I think that people are going to expect sheer entertainment we just ran all of it with Arlene Phillips. To date we’ve been doing the show out of order and then when we put the whole show together we looked at each other and thought wow this is really amazing.” Lorna said.
Asked if the show contained any particular moments that were special to her, Lora said:- “There are no particular standout moments in the show because it’s all brand new voices and performances. For me there is no stand out moment, the whole thing is very special.”
