One of the most cherished British love stories of the 21st century is getting the West End musical treatment it deserves. David Nicholls' bestselling novel One Day will arrive at the Garrick Theatre from 17 November 2026, following a critically acclaimed world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival. Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose will reprise the roles they originated in Scotland, bringing the epic, bittersweet romance of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew to London's theatreland.
Tickets are on sale now for what promises to be one of the most talked-about new shows of the 2026/27 season.
The Story Behind One Day The Musical
Published in 2009, David Nicholls' One Day became a modern classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and spawning both a 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and a hugely popular Netflix series in 2024. The novel's ingenious structure revisits its two central characters, Emma and Dexter, on the same date, 15th July, every year for two decades, beginning with the night they first meet after their university graduation in Edinburgh in 1988.
It is a story about timing, missed connections, parallel lives, and the way love can persist even when circumstances conspire to keep two people apart. As the years pass, audiences will watch Emma and Dexter navigate wildly different trajectories: career triumphs and failures, other relationships, personal reinventions, and the question that hangs over everything: will they ever truly find their way back to each other?
The musical format feels like a natural home for this narrative. Each year becomes its own vignette, its own emotional world, and the passing of time, one of the novel's most powerful themes, can be expressed through evolving musical styles and shifting tonal registers. It's a structure that invites the kind of emotional crescendo only live musical theatre can deliver.
A Hit at the Edinburgh Festival
The decision to premiere One Day The Musical in Edinburgh was a stroke of genius. Both Emma and Dexter hail from the city, and the novel's opening chapter is steeped in its atmosphere: Arthur's Seat, the post-exam euphoria, the long summer twilight. Launching the show at the Edinburgh Festival placed the story in its spiritual home, and audiences and critics responded warmly.
The Edinburgh run established the production's emotional credentials and proved that the source material could sing, quite literally. Now the show makes the leap to the West End, where it will have the opportunity to reach a much wider audience and settle into a longer run at one of London's most intimate and historic theatres.
Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose Lead the Cast
The casting of Jamie Muscato as Dexter Mayhew and Sharon Rose as Emma Morley is a major draw. Both performers have built formidable reputations across the West End.
Muscato first made a significant impression as Jason Dean (J.D.) in the original London production of Heathers: The Musical in 2018. He went on to play Christian in Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby alongside Corbin Bleu. Most recently, he has been starring as the Emcee opposite Joy Woods in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, a role he plays until September 2026. It's a CV that demonstrates remarkable range, from brooding antiheroes to dazzling showmen, and Dexter's charming but often infuriating arc should suit him perfectly.
Sharon Rose brings equally impressive credentials. Her theatre work includes playing the titular role in Sylvia at the Old Vic Theatre opposite Beverley Knight, and she has performed as Eliza in Hamilton in the West End. She has also appeared on screen in BBC's Silent Witness. Rose's ability to combine vocal power with emotional subtlety makes her an ideal fit for Emma, a character whose quiet determination and vulnerability are the novel's beating heart.
Why One Day Could Be the West End's Next Big Hit
The West End has seen a wave of successful musical adaptations drawn from beloved novels and films in recent years. From Moulin Rouge! to Back to the Future, audiences have shown a huge appetite for stories they already love, reimagined for the stage. One Day fits neatly into this trend, but with a crucial difference: its source material is a contemporary literary novel rather than a big-budget blockbuster, which gives the musical an opportunity to be more intimate, more emotionally raw, and more character-driven than many of its peers.
The story's universal themes of love, regret, ambition, and the relentless passage of time resonate across generations. And with the Netflix adaptation having introduced the story to a younger audience just two years ago, the timing for a West End musical could hardly be better.
The Garrick Theatre: An Intimate Setting for an Intimate Story
The choice of the Garrick Theatre as the London home for One Day feels absolutely right. With a capacity of around 650 seats, the Garrick offers the kind of intimate setting that this story demands. The emotional intensity of watching two lives unfold across twenty years requires a closeness between performer and audience that a cavernous space simply cannot provide.
Located on Charing Cross Road in the heart of the West End, the Garrick is also one of London's most beautiful Victorian theatres. It has a rich history of hosting plays and musicals that prize storytelling above spectacle, making it an ideal match for a production that will live or die on the strength of its performances and its emotional truth.
Should You Book?
If you're a fan of the novel, the film, or the Netflix series, this is essential viewing. If you simply love well-crafted musical theatre that puts character and emotion at the centre of the experience, One Day The Musical should be very high on your list. The combination of a universally loved story, two outstanding West End performers, and a proven production that has already won over Edinburgh audiences makes this one of the safest bets of the coming season.
With previews beginning at the Garrick Theatre from 17 November 2026, demand is expected to be high. Booking early is strongly recommended, particularly for the opening weeks and the Christmas period.
