Fresh out of college and looking for a purpose, Princeton moves into a shabby flat on a rundown New York street, where humans and puppets share the rent, the gossip and the bills. Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx wrote the music and lyrics, with a book by Jeff Whitty, and this production is directed by original Broadway director Jason Moore with the original Broadway puppets.
Plan for about 2 hours and 15 minutes, including one interval. Expect quick-fire comedy songs such as It Sucks to Be Me and The Internet Is for Porn, puppeteers working in full view alongside the characters, and a surprisingly warm story about growing up. The Shaftesbury Theatre sits where Shaftesbury Avenue meets High Holborn, a short walk from Holborn, Tottenham Court Road and Covent Garden stations, with plenty of places to eat nearby.
Pick a performance, compare seats across the Shaftesbury Theatre, then book through the Avenue Q page on British Theatre. Evening shows run Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with Friday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. The season is booking until 3 January 2027, so weekend and holiday dates are worth securing early.
There is no dress code. Arrive in good time, as latecomers may be held until a suitable break. The show contains strong language, adult themes and strobe lighting, so it is not one for younger children despite the puppets. Tickets cannot be cancelled or rescheduled, so check your date and time before you complete your booking.
If you like your musicals irreverent, see The Book of Mormon, or for comedy chaos on stage try The Play That Goes Wrong.
Recommended for ages 13 and over, with parental guidance advised. Babies and children under 3 are not admitted, and under 16s must attend with and sit next to someone aged 18 or over.
