What is Evita about?
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Evita tells the story of Eva Perón, who rose from poverty to become the most powerful woman in Argentina. Through the cynical eyes of narrator Ché, the musical charts Eva's journey from small-town girl to actress to First Lady, examining her political ambition, her manipulation of public image, and the genuine love she inspired in the Argentine people. The score includes Don't Cry for Me Argentina, one of the most famous songs in musical theatre history.
Why see Evita?
Evita is one of Lloyd Webber's most dramatically satisfying works, combining a genuinely compelling true story with a score that ranges from intimate ballads to sweeping anthems. The role of Eva demands extraordinary vocal power and stage presence, and the best productions find the complexity in a character who is simultaneously a political operator and a genuine champion of the poor. The show works as both a biographical drama and a commentary on the nature of political celebrity that feels startlingly relevant today.
Practical information for visitors
Evita plays periodically in the West End. Check current listings for venue, dates, and ticket availability. The show is suitable for families, though the political themes are best appreciated by older children and adults. Running time is approximately two hours and fifteen minutes including an interval.
