Nanny McPhee the Musical
About the show
Emma Thompson’s Nanny McPhee the musical, directed by Katy Rudd, has its world premiere at the Aldwych Theatre from 6 November 2027.
Nanny McPhee the musical in the West End
She’s on her way. The world premiere of Nanny McPhee the musical arrives at the Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End, with performances from Saturday 6 November 2027. It is a spectacular new adventure based on the beloved 2005 film Nanny McPhee, and the producers describe it as a story written for everyone.
The story
When the mysterious figure of Nanny McPhee arrives at the Browns’ door, she discovers a household in chaos: anarchic children who have driven away every nanny before her, a desperate father, a donkey that is out of control and a baby who will stop at nothing. Armed with her strange knobbly stick, exceedingly unorthodox methods and quite a lot of magic, Nanny McPhee begins to restore harmony. And, as it turns out, the children aren’t the only members of the family with lessons to learn.
Written by Emma Thompson
The musical is written by Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor and writer Emma Thompson, who wrote and starred in the Nanny McPhee films, with music by singer-songwriter Gary Clark (Sing Street) and original lyrics by Thompson and Clark. “I’ve lived with Nanny McPhee for so long that to see her finally tread the boards is supremely exciting,” says Thompson. “Theatre feels like her natural home: magic, music, mischief and a good dollop of danger can all happen right in front of you.”
Creative team
Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) directs, with set and costume designs by Tony and Olivier Award winner Rob Howell (Matilda the Musical) and choreography by World Choreography Award winner Ellen Kane (Paddington The Musical). Orchestrations are by Simon Hale, music supervision by Nigel Lilley, lighting by Howard Hudson and sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph. Illusions are by Magic Circle member Chris Fisher, puppetry by Samuel Wyer and projections by Andrzej Goulding, with casting by Natalie Gallacher CDG.
Nanny McPhee is presented by Universal Theatrical Group and Working Title Films, in association with Studiocanal on Stage and MGM on Stage.
