Ranking theatre by audience score is a blunt instrument, but it is an honest one if you are transparent about the method. What follows is drawn from our own live booking data for the week of 27 July to 2 August 2026: every production we could confirm is actually playing this week, scored by verified audience ratings, with anything under 20 reviews held back from the ranking because a 5.0 from seven people tells you nothing. That leaves 26 productions with a rating and a meaningful sample. Here is what the numbers actually say.

The top of the table: two shows at 4.9

Two productions share the highest rating in our data this week, and they could hardly be less alike. The Lion King at the Lyceum scores 4.9 from 10,289 reviews, which is far and away the largest sample of any show on our books. A rating that high sustained over that many people is the genuinely remarkable statistic in this week's data. Most shows regress towards the middle as the sample grows; this one has not, 27 years in.

Level with it on score, and at the other end of the volume scale, is My Neighbour Totoro at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, also 4.9 but from 320 reviews. The Royal Shakespeare Company's Studio Ghibli staging is the show people come out of looking slightly stunned, and its score has held since it returned. It closes in January 2027, which is far enough away to plan around and close enough that the extension is worth taking seriously.

The 4.8 tier

Five productions sit at 4.8. ABBA Voyage has 4,770 reviews behind it, the second largest sample in the entire top tier, which makes it arguably the most reliably rated thing on this list. Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Piccadilly holds 4.8 from 3,463 reviews and is booking to 16 January 2027, which is the rare case of a show this highly rated still having a long runway on sale.

The Devil Wears Prada at the Dominion takes 4.8 from 1,833 reviews, and Hadestown at the Lyric the same score from 981. Hadestown is the one we would push hardest on a value basis as well as a quality one, because it starts at £25 this week, which for a show rated this highly is the most favourable ratio in the data.

Highest-rated is not the same as most-reviewed

This is the distinction most "best of" lists quietly collapse, and it matters. The most-reviewed productions playing this week are The Lion King (10,289), The Phantom of the Opera (6,798), Mamma Mia! (6,311), Les Miserables (5,143), ABBA Voyage (4,770) and Wicked (4,131). Only two of those six also appear in the highest-rated tier.

Phantom, Wicked and Matilda all sit at 4.6 from samples in the thousands. That is not a criticism of any of them; it is what happens when a show sells to everybody rather than to an audience that has self-selected. A 4.6 from 6,798 people is a stronger signal of consistent quality than a 4.9 from 40, and if you are choosing a first West End show, the fat end of the distribution is usually the safer bet.

The 4.7 group, and where the plays are

The 4.7 band is the deepest: Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables, The Book of Mormon, Hamilton, Six, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and Hercules. That is most of the West End's commercial centre of gravity sitting within a tenth of a point of itself, which tells you something about how narrow the quality band at the top of this market really is.

One genuine pattern in our data: plays are barely represented. Of the 26 productions with 20 or more reviews this week, only two are plays, Much Ado About Nothing at the Globe (4.7 from 43) and Cyrano de Bergerac at the Noel Coward (4.5 from 69). Plays run shorter, sell fewer seats and accumulate ratings far more slowly, so audience scores systematically under-cover them. If you rank the West End purely by review volume you will end up recommending musicals and almost nothing else, which is a limitation of the method rather than a verdict on the plays.

Every production here was checked against its venue's own listing to confirm it is playing between 27 July and 2 August 2026, then ranked on rating, with review count as the tie-break and a 20-review floor for inclusion.
