Oggi è stato annunciato il cast del tour di Hairspray 2015, in partenza a settembre dal Curve Theatre di Leicester, prima di fare tappa in oltre 25 teatri in tutto il Regno Unito.
Tony Maudsley (Benidorm di ITV1) interpreterà Edna Turnblad. Al suo fianco ci saranno l’attrice e presentatrice TV e di teatro Claire Sweeney (Educating Rita, Guys and Dolls) nel ruolo di Velma Von Tussle, l’attore candidato agli Olivier Award e amatissimo volto di Blue Peter Peter Duncan (Tumble di BBC1) nei panni di Wilbur Turnblad, e la cantante britannica e performer del West End Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, The X Factor) come Motormouth Maybelle. Freya Sutton riprenderà il ruolo di Tracy Turnblad, accanto all’affermato interprete di musical Jon Tsouras (A Chorus Line), che sarà Corny Collins. Dex Lee (The Scottsboro Boys) interpreterà Seaweed, Ashley Gilmour (Miss Saigon) sarà Link Larkin, Lauren Stroud (Wicked) sarà Amber, Monique Young (Top Hat) sarà Penny e Karis Jack (Urinetown) sarà Little Inez.
Siamo a Baltimora nel 1962: Tracy Turnblad, una ragazza formosa dai capelli voluminosi e dal cuore ancora più grande, è determinata a inseguire i propri sogni e a ballare fino ad arrivare in TV nazionale. Il provino di Tracy la trasforma in una celebrità locale e ben presto usa la sua nuova notorietà per lottare per l’uguaglianza, conquistando lungo la strada anche l’idolo cittadino Link Larkin.
Hairspray è un musical tratto dall’omonimo film del 1988, con Divine e Ricki Lake, firmato dal regista cult John Waters. Con musiche e testi di Marc Shaiman e Scott Wittman e libretto di Mark O’Donnell e Thomas Meehan, Hairspray ha debuttato a Broadway nel 2002 tra recensioni entusiastiche, vincendo poi otto Tony Awards. La produzione londinese ha aperto allo Shaftesbury Theatre nel 2007 e ha conquistato quattro Laurence Olivier Awards, tra cui quello per il Miglior Nuovo Musical. Forte di un successo internazionale, Hairspray è andato in scena anche in Sudafrica, Giappone, Corea del Sud, Cina e Dubai. Dopo lo straordinario successo a teatro, nel 2007 è uscito anche il film tratto dal musical, con John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer e James Marsden.
