토머스는 재택근무를 한다. 그는 하루를 자신이 원하는 대로 정교하게 설계하며, 가장 친한 친구인 클라이브와 끝없이 수다를 떤다. 클라이브는 키가 큰 실내 화분 선인장이다. 하지만 직장에서 일이 꼬이기 시작하고 아파트 벽이 점점 좁혀오는 듯한 압박감이 들자, 토머스는 서서히 무너져 내린다. 이웃들이 집착의 대상이 되고, 바깥세상과의 연결은 점점 해어진다. 그리고 늘 가시 돋치고 말없는 클라이브는, 토머스가 풀려나가는 과정을 오직 묵묵히 지켜보는 유일한 목격자가 된다.
