The Lives of Others Announces Full Cast for Adelphi Theatre Premiere

Sonia Friedman Productions has announced the full company for the world premiere of The Lives of Others, Robert Icke's stage adaptation of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Academy Award-winning film. The strictly limited run plays the Adelphi Theatre with previews from 14 October 2026, opening on 29 October and continuing until 9 January 2027.

Joining Keira Knightley, Stephen Dillane and Luke Thompson are Jamie Ankrah, Jake Benson, Matt Ray Brown, Lucy Doyle, Calum Finlay, Josh Gordon, Paul Higgins, Leda Hodgson, Nick Holder, Sibylla Meienberg, Irfan Shamji, Richard Sutton and Andrew Woodall. Icke adapts and directs the thriller about surveillance, art and conscience in 1980s East Germany.

What the play is about

A writer and an actor are placed under Stasi watch. From the attic above their apartment, their observer listens for evidence of subversion, only to find that watching a life can change your own. The production reunites Icke and Friedman after collaborations including Oedipus, Manhunt, Hamlet, The Doctor, Oresteia and 1984.

A limited Adelphi premiere

The Lives of Others arrives at the Adelphi Theatre as a world-premiere stage thriller rather than a long-running musical fixture. That limited shape, from mid-October previews through early January 2027, is part of the event: a major film property, a Robert Icke text, and a company led by Keira Knightley, Stephen Dillane and Luke Thompson for a short West End season only.

Design is by Hildegard Bechtler, with lighting by Jon Clark. The story's focus on surveillance, artistic freedom and moral compromise gives the evening a contemporary charge even though it is set in 1984 East Germany. Rehearsal photography from the first day of work has been circulated by the producers for press use.
