The Story

East Berlin, the mid-1980s. A dedicated officer of the Stasi, the German Democratic Republic's feared secret police, is assigned to place a celebrated playwright and his actress partner under covert surveillance. He installs himself in the attic above their flat, settles into his headphones, and begins to listen. What unfolds is a slow, deeply human study of conscience: the more he hears, the harder it becomes to remain the invisible, neutral instrument the state requires him to be.

At its heart, The Lives Of Others asks what happens to a person who spends their days immersed in the private world of others, and whether art, love, and moral courage can survive in a society built on fear and control. These questions feel no less urgent today than they did in the era the story depicts.

Robert Icke's Adaptation

Robert Icke is one of the most distinctive voices working in British theatre. His adaptations are known for their structural intelligence and their ability to locate the theatrical potential within source material that might seem resistant to the stage.
