Jonathan Groff is heading from Stratford-upon-Avon back to Broadway. The Tony Award winner, who is currently playing Rosalind in the Royal Shakespeare Company's all-male As You Like It, will star in The Amish Project, a solo play by Jessica Dickey directed by Sarna Lapine. Performances begin at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York on Wednesday 10 February 2027.
The production is presented by Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy. An official opening night and the design team will be announced later.
From Rosalind in Stratford to The Amish Project
UK audiences can still see Groff on this side of the Atlantic for now. He is making his RSC debut as Rosalind in Daniel Evans's production of As You Like It at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which runs until Saturday 7 November 2026. The company includes Fisayo Akinade as Celia, Elliot Barnes-Worrell as Orlando, Gary Wilmot as Duke Frederick and Duke Senior, Greg Haiste as Touchstone and Richard McCabe as Jaques.
The move to a solo play is a striking change of pace. His recent Broadway outings, Merrily We Roll Along and Just in Time, were both large company shows. This time he will be alone on stage.
The Amish Project and the story behind it
The producers describe The Amish Project as "a deeply moving solo play about the astonishing power of compassion in the face of unimaginable loss". When tragedy shatters a close-knit Amish community, what follows is an extraordinary act of grace that challenges ideas about forgiveness. The play is inspired by true events that unfolded just minutes from where Groff grew up in Pennsylvania, and it is described as an intimate portrait of a place and a community channelled through a single performer.
The play is a fictional response to the 2006 shooting at a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County. Dickey wrote it as a solo piece and performed it herself at its Off-Broadway premiere.
Jessica Dickey's play on its way to Broadway
The Amish Project debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival and was developed at the Cherry Lane Theatre before premiering Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009. It has since become Dickey's most produced play, with productions at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Milwaukee Rep, American Theater Company in Chicago and City Theatre in Pittsburgh, among others. Dickey's other plays include The Rembrandt and The Convent.
Lapine's directing credits include Call Me Izzy and Sunday in the Park with George.
Jonathan Groff's Broadway and screen career
Groff won a Tony Award for Merrily We Roll Along and has also been Tony nominated for Just in Time, in which he played Bobby Darin, as well as Hamilton and Spring Awakening. On screen his credits include Glee, Mindhunter and Frozen.
Jonathan Groff on The Amish Project
"Twenty years ago this month, an unimaginable tragedy happened in a one room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Jessica Dickey wrote an astounding work of art in response," said Groff. "Sarna Lapine sent me The Amish Project last year and I was floored by the urgency and potent poetry of Jessica's writing as she dives headfirst into the many aftershocks of this horrific event and explores the idea that sometimes the most radical human act is forgiveness. I am profoundly grateful to be bringing Jessica's play to Broadway alongside Sarna and this incredible team."
Dickey said: "I wrote The Amish Project in the heartbreak of my twenties, grappling with how to make a meaningful life as an artist in a world capable of such violence. The play launched my writing career and changed my life." Lapine said the writing is "precise, lean, and strong", and that the play asks, "how does one forgive the unforgivable?"
The producers added: "There is nothing quite like experiencing the singular Jonathan Groff live."
The Amish Project on-sale dates and what comes next

A fan pre-sale opens on Monday 9 November 2026 at 10am New York time, which is 3pm in the UK, and general sale follows on Tuesday 10 November at the same time.
