RECENSIE: Richard II, Arcola Theatre ✭✭✭✭
Macbeth. Als het gaat om de meest 'politieke' stukken van Shakespeare, zouden velen direct Macbeth en Richard III noemen. Dat is niet zo vreemd gezien de enorme invloed van House of Cards, waarvan de verschillende versies sterk leunen op deze politieke tragedies. De nieuwe enscenering van Richard II — waarbij de originele teksten behouden zijn, maar het verhaal zich afpeelt in het hedendaagse Britse parlement — loopt hierdoor het risico op een ongunstige vergelijking. Toch blijkt dit een zeer gevatte interpretatie te zijn, gedragen door uitstekende hoofdrolspelers, een solide bijrolbezetting en een sober maar uiterst effectief decor.
