The historic Granada building in Walthamstow, which once hosted legends like The Beatles and Dusty Springfield, will begin its new life as a 960-seat theatre venue this May. Soho Theatre today announced opening plans for its ambitious new space, which promises to bring world-class entertainment back to this Grade II listed landmark.
A New Cultural Hub
The transformed venue features multiple bars, a restaurant, and studio spaces, marking a significant expansion of London's theatrical landscape. Opening in May 2025, the theatre will present a diverse programme spanning comedy, theatre, and live entertainment.
Star-Studded Programme
Comedy takes centre stage in the opening season, with the monthly Neon Nights featuring acclaimed performers including Sara Pascoe, Rosie Jones, Larry Dean, and Phil Wang. International talent will also feature prominently, with performances scheduled from Rahul Dua and Biswa Kalyan Rath.
The season opens with Natalie Palamides' acclaimed show Weer (May 2-10), while winter brings a traditional pantomime to Walthamstow for the first time in over 70 years with Aladdin and The Magic Lamp, directed by Susie McKenna.
Community Focus
In a significant move to ensure local accessibility, the theatre will offer 15,000 tickets at £15 during its first year. The venue's commitment to community engagement extends to workshops and educational programmes for aspiring theatre-makers.
"This isn't just about bringing world-class entertainment to Walthamstow," said co-executive directors Mark Godfrey and Sam Hansford. "It's about creating a cultural hub that serves and involves the local community."
Heritage Meets Innovation
The careful restoration of the 1930s Granada building has preserved its Grade II listed features while incorporating modern theatrical facilities. The project, made possible through partnership between Waltham Forest Council and Soho Theatre, followed a community-led campaign to preserve the historic space.
Additional programming includes a live version of the "Brown Girls Do It Too" podcast, Jonny Woo's "Un-Royal Variety Performance," and a film festival celebrating Walthamstow's cinematic heritage.
Tickets for the opening season go on sale today, marking a new chapter in London's theatrical landscape and the revival of a historic entertainment venue.
