Het theater opende zijn deuren als The Fortune Thriller Theatre op 9 augustus 1924 en was daarmee het eerste Londense theater dat na de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd gebouwd. Het werd opgericht in opdracht van Lawrence Cowen, een auteur en scenarioschrijver die zelf de openingsvoorstelling 'Sinners' schreef. Het stuk flopte echter en werd na twee weken al stopgezet. In de jaren 30 wisselden de producties sterk, met onder andere amateurtoneel. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het theater door de ENSA gebruikt om live entertainment te verzorgen voor de Britse troepen. In de naoorlogse jaren stonden er talloze grote namen uit de theater- en comedywereld op de planken van het Fortune. Zo verwelkomde het theater iconen als Dame Judi Dench, Maureen Lipman, Flanders and Swann en de cast van 'Beyond the Fringe'—de beroemde revue uit Cambridge die Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller en Alan Bennett samenbracht. Het theater is tegenwoordig vooral onlosmakelijk verbonden met Stephen Mallatratts bewerking van 'The Woman in Black'. Deze klassieker ging in 1989 in première, vierde in 2001 zijn 5000ste voorstelling en is nog altijd te zien. Daarmee is het de op één na langstlopende toneelproductie in de geschiedenis van het beroemde West End.

The theatre opened under the name The Fortune Thriller Theatre on August 9 1924, making it the first London theatre to be built after World War 1. It was constructed by commission of Lawrence Cowen, an author and playwright who penned the opening production Sinners.

The play would close after two weeks. Productions throughout the 1930s varied and included amateur work. During World War 2, the theatre was used by the ENSA to present live entertainment for the enjoyment of the British troops.

The post war years saw a lot of famous names in theatre and comedy perform at the Fortune. The venue played host to names such as Dame Judi Dench, Maureen Lipman, Flanders and Swann, and Beyond the Fringe, a Cambridge revue that brought together Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller, and Alan Bennet.

The theatre is most closely associated with Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of The Woman in Black, which opened in 1989. Celebrating 5000 performances in 2001, and still running to this day, it is the second longest running play in the history of the West End.
