O Phoenix Theatre abriu portas a 24 de setembro de 1930. A produção inaugural foi Private Lives, de Noël Coward, com o próprio Coward em cena, ao lado de Adrienne Allen, Gertrude Lawrence e um jovem Laurence Olivier. Coward regressou em 1936 com Tonight at 8:30. Em 1948, o teatro acolheu duas novas peças de Terence Rattigan (Harlequinade e The Browning Version), seguidas de mais um regresso de Coward (Quadrille, em 1952). Mais tarde, seria homenageado em 1969 com uma matiné à meia-noite e com a mudança de nome do bar do foyer para Noel Coward Bar. O teatro viveu um grande êxito em 1968 com uma versão musical de The Canterbury Tales, que esteve em cena durante quase 2.000 representações, e voltou a triunfar em 1978 com Night and Day, de Tom Stoppard, em cartaz por 2 anos. Os musicais dominaram a década de 1980, com produções como The Biograph Girl, The Baker’s Wife e Into the Woods. A produção de mais longa duração e mais famosa da casa é Blood Brothers, de Willy Russell. Depois de se transferir do Albery Theatre em 1991, o espetáculo manteve-se em cena durante 21 anos. Em 2013, o Phoenix acolheu a produção original do West End de Once.

The Phoenix Theatre opened on 24 September 1930. Its inaugural production was Private Lives by Noel Coward, which starred Coward himself, Adrienne Allen, Gertrude Lawrence, and a young Laurence Olivier. Coward returned in 1936 with Tonight at 8:30.

In 1948, the theatre played host to two new plays by Terrance Rattigan (Harlequinade and The Browning Version), followed by another return by Coward (1952’s Quadrille). He would later be honored in 1969 with a midnight matinee and the renaming of the foyer bar to the Noel Coward Bar.

The theatre experienced great success in 1968 with a musical version of The Canterbury Tales, which ran for nearly 2,000 performances, and again in 1978 with Top Stoppard’s Night and Day, which ran for 2 years.

Musicals dominated the 1980s, with productions such as The Biograph Girl, The Baker’s Wife, and Into the Woods.

The most famous long running production in the theatre is Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers. After transferring from The Albery Theatre in 1991, the show ran for 21 years. In 2013, the theatre hosted the original West end production of Once.
