O Victoria Palace Theatre começou por ser uma pequena sala de concertos por cima do Royal Standard Hotel (construído em 1832). Em 1850, o edifício foi ampliado e a sala passou a chamar-se Moy’s Music Hall. Esta designação não durou muito e, em 1863, já era conhecido como Royal Standard Music Hall. O edifício acabou por ser demolido e reconstruído duas vezes (em 1886 e em 1910) e reabriu com o novo nome de The Victoria Palace, apresentando números de variedades e revues. As origens de music hall do espaço provocaram reacções mistas quando o teatro tentou avançar para uma programação mais “adulta”. Por exemplo, uma peça patriótica chamada Young England foi tão mal recebida pela crítica que acabou por se tornar um êxito de culto. O regresso à revue revelou-se mais rentável, com produções como Me and My Girl (1937), The Crazy Ones (uma série de revues de comédia entre 1947 e 1962) e o Black and White Minstrel Show (em cena ao longo dos anos 1960 até 1972). Os musicais também se revelaram um sucesso para o teatro, com The Buddy Holly Story em cartaz durante 13 anos (transferindo-se para o Strand Theatre em 1995). Esta tendência continuou no século XXI, com Fame, Grease e a estreia de Billy Elliot.

The Victoria Palace Theatre began as a small concert room above the Royal Standard Hotel (built 1832). In 1850, the building was expanded and the room became Moy’s Music Hall. This moniker didn’t last long, and by 1863 it was called the Royal Standard Music Hall. The building saw subsequently demolished and rebuilt twice (1886 and 1910), with the new name of The Victoria Palace, presenting varieties and revues.

The music hall roots of the venue led to a mixed response when the theatre attempted to move towards a more mature output. For example, a patriotic play called Young England was so poorly received critically that it became a cult hit.

A return to revue proved more profitable, with productions such as Me and My Girl (1937), The Crazy Ones (a series of comedy revues 1947-1962), and the Black and White Minstrel Show (which played through the 1960s to 1972). Musicals also proved to be successful for the theatre, with The Buddy Holly Story running for 13 years (transferring to the Strand Theatre in 1995).

This trend has continued into the 21st Century, with Fame, Grease, and the premiere of Billy Elliot.
