Dame Maggie Smith, the legendary actress whose career spanned seven decades, passed away peacefully in a London hospital on September 27th, 2024, at the age of 89.
Smith's illustrious career began on the stage at the tender age of 17. From her debut as Viola in Twelfth Night at the Oxford Playhouse, she went on to conquer both the British and American stages. The National Theatre became a significant platform for her, where she tackled Shakespearean roles alongside legendary actors like Laurence Olivier.
Her talents extended beyond the classics, captivating audiences with contemporary works as well. She ventured further afield with a successful tenure at Canada's Stratford Festival before returning triumphantly to England in the late 1970s. The West End stage became her playground, where she graced audiences in renowned productions like The Way of the World and Lettice and Lovage, the latter earning her a Tony Award in 1990.
Unfazed by age, Smith continued to be a prolific force in theatre well into the 21st century. Her recent performances in A German Life at the Bridge Theatre even garnered her an Evening Standard Theatre Award.
While her stage presence was undeniable, Smith's screen career was no less remarkable. Roles in the beloved Harry Potter franchise and Downton Abbey solidified her status as a national treasure. Her undeniable talent was recognized with two Academy Awards, for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978).
The British theatre world will pay tribute to Dame Maggie Smith next week. West End theatres will dim their lights for two minutes at 7pm on Tuesday, October 1st, in honor of her immense contribution to the stage.
Maggie Smith leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, wit, and an unmatched dedication to her craft. She will be deeply missed by theatre lovers around the world.
