2020년 볼트 페스티벌 수상자 발표

런던에서 열린 볼트 페스티벌 2020 어워즈( Vault Festival 2020 Awards )의 연례 시상식에서 수상작이 오늘 발표됐다.

페스티벌은 원래 오늘 종료될 예정이었지만, 코로나바이러스 팬데믹으로 인해 일주일 일찍 막을 내렸다. 별도의 시상식 대신, 볼트 페스티벌 공동 창립자 맷 버처(Mat Burtcher)와 앤디 조지(Andy George), 그리고 연극·퍼포먼스 부문 총괄 벡 마틴-윌리엄스(Bec Martin-Williams)가 소셜 미디어를 통해 수상작을 발표했다.

관객이 뽑은 상(People’s Choice Award)은 크리스 초른지(Chris Czornjy)가 집필하고 애덤 렌슨 프로덕션스(Adam Lenson Productions)가 제작한 Stages: A Video Game Musical이 받았다. 3월 3일부터 8일까지 볼트에서 공연된 이 작품에는 뮤지컬 스타 안나 제인 케이시(Anna Jane Casey)와 앤드루 랭트리(Andrew Langtree)가 에이치 와일리(Aitch Wylie), 맥스 알렉산더-테일러(Max Alexander-Taylor)와 함께 출연했다.

혁신상(Innovation Award)은 2월 4일부터 16일까지 공연된 콰이어틀리 파이팅 시어터(Quietly Fighting Theatre)의 장소특정형(site-specific) 이머시브 공연 The Grim이 차지했다. 이 작품은 관객을 ‘사신 사무국(Office of the Grim Reaper)’에서 일하는 프리랜서 ‘리퍼(reaper)’로 바꿔 놓았다.

심야 프로그램의 뛰어난 작품에 수여되는 애프터 다크상(After Dark Award)은 세아욘세(Séayoncé)의 Comedy Vault에게 돌아갔다. 이 작품은 다니엘 와이(Daniel Wye)와 더 굿 위치(The Good Witch)가 선보인 코미디·카바레·드랙 쇼로, “퀴어의 탁월함과 영적인 매콤함이 함께하는 밤”으로 소개됐다.

창의성, 협력, 친절이라는 페스티벌의 정신과 가치를 가장 잘 구현한 단체에 수여되는 스피릿상(Spirit Award)은 1월 29일부터 2월 6일까지 공연된 플라스터 캐스트 시어터(Plaster Cast Theatre)의 Sound Cistem이 받았다. 이 작품은 트랜스젠더 몸을 향한 시스젠더 시선을 चुनौती하는 “퀴어 축하”이자 “댄스 파티”로 불렸다.

이 밖에도 매주 ‘이번 주의 작품(Show of the Week)’과 뛰어난 신작에 주어지는 ‘오리진스상(Origins Award)’이 수여됐다. 전체 수상작과 후보 목록은 아래에서 확인할 수 있다.

1월 28일부터 3월 15일까지 7주 동안 2,700명 이상의 아티스트가 519편의 서로 다른 작품을 선보였고, 관객 7만 3,000명 이상이 페스티벌을 찾았다. 다만, 이번 주에 예정돼 있었으나 진행되지 못한 97편의 작품은 이 수치에 포함되지 않는다.

올해 페스티벌은 여성, 유색인종, 장애가 있는 창작자, LGBTQ+ 아티스트, 노동계급 출신 창작진이 주도한 작품을 그 어느 때보다 많이 선보였다.

버처는 “모두에게 매우 어렵고 두려운 시기이지만, 볼트 페스티벌 2020의 일부였던 값진 노력과 훌륭한 공연들을 잠시나마 기념하고 인정하고 싶었다”고 말했다.

마틴-윌리엄스는 “페스티벌을 일찍 닫게 되어 마음이 너무 아프지만, 8주 중 7주 동안 작품을 선보이며 사람들을 한데 모아준 놀라운 아티스트와 컴퍼니들은 분명히 어떤 형태로든 인정받고, 그 놀라운 성취를 축하받아 마땅하다고 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.
