Curious Incident en Hamilton grote winnaars bij de Drama Desk Awards

De productie van het National Theatre heeft zes Drama Desk Awards in de wacht gesleept, waaronder die voor Beste Toneelstuk, Beste Acteur en Beste Regisseur. Alleen Hamilton, de nieuwe musical van Lin-Manuel Miranda, deed het met zeven awards nog beter. Het is voor het eerst sinds 1983 (met Little Shop Of Horrors) dat een Off-Broadway show meer prijzen pakt dan de Broadway-tegenhangers. Helen Mirren won de award voor Beste Actrice voor haar rol in The Audience. De onemanshow van Jim Dale, Just Jim Dale, momenteel te zien in Londen, won de prijs voor Beste Revue.

De Drama Desk Awards worden jaarlijks uitgereikt in diverse categorieën en zijn de enige grote theaterprijzen in New York waarbij producties van Broadway, Off-Broadway en Off-Off Broadway het in dezelfde categorie tegen elkaar opnemen. De organisatie werd in 1949 opgericht door een groep critici, redacteuren en verslaggevers om de gemeenschap te informeren over cruciale ontwikkelingen in de theaterwereld.
