St. Martin’s Theatre slog upp portarna den 23 november 1916. Teatern ritades som en pendang till den intilliggande Ambassadors Theatre, men medan systerteatern öppnade redan 1913 innebar första världskrigets utbrott att bygget av St. Martin’s försenades med tre år. Premiärföreställningen på den nya scenen var musikalen Houp La!, och genom åren har teatern huserat välkända uppsättningar som R.U.R., The Grass is Greener, The Wrong Side of the Park och Sleuth. År 1974 flyttades Agatha Christies klassiker Råttfällan (The Mousetrap) till St. Martin’s efter att ha spelats på Ambassadors sedan 1952. Föreställningen spelas än idag och firade under 2012 både sitt 60-årsjubileum i West End och sin 25 000:e föreställning – en bedrift som befäster dess position som världens genom tiderna mest långlivade teaterproduktion.

Parkeringsmöjligheter finns vid MasterPark Cambridge Circus och NCP Upper St Martins Lane (Bedfordbury). Dessutom ingår parkeringarna i Soho och Chinatown i Q-Park-systemet.

St Martin’s Theatre was designed by W. G. R. Sprague as one of a pair with the neighbouring Ambassadors Theatre on West Street. Richard Verney, 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, and B. A. (Bertie) Meyer commissioned both buildings. The Ambassadors opened in 1913, but the First World War delayed the St Martin’s, which finally opened on 23 November 1916 with the Edwardian musical comedy Houp La!, starring Gertie Millar and produced by Charles B. Cochran.

Later successes included R.U.R. with Basil Rathbone, The Grass is Greener, John Mortimer’s The Wrong Side of the Park and, in 1970, the thriller Sleuth. The theatre was Grade II listed in March 1973 and is still owned by the Willoughby de Broke family.

In March 1974 The Mousetrap transferred next door from the Ambassadors, where it had opened in 1952. It has played at St Martin’s ever since, making it the longest-running play in the world.

The Mousetrap (March 1974 -)

There are three shallow steps from the pavement to the foyer, where the box office is on the left. Wheelchair users enter via a removable ramp at the main entrance, and staff are on hand to help. There are two wheelchair spaces, one in Box C and one in the Dress Circle, and you can transfer to an aisle seat in the Dress Circle.

There are five steps to the back of the Dress Circle, with two steps between rows. The Stalls and Upper Circle are not suitable for patrons with walking difficulties, and there are no lifts. All bars are reached by stairs.

An adapted toilet is on the Dress Circle level, reached via the Tower Court entrance. An RF assistive listening system works on all three levels with a headset or a T-coil pendant (no Bluetooth). Captioned performances are offered on selected dates; ask the box office for upcoming ones. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome, and staff can dog sit by prior arrangement.
