El Teatro St. Martin’s abrió sus puertas el 23 de noviembre de 1916. Fue diseñado como parte de un dúo junto al Teatro Ambassador’s. El Ambassador’s abrió en 1913, y la Primera Guerra Mundial retrasó las obras del St. Martin’s durante 3 años. La producción inaugural fue la comedia musical ¡Houp La! Otras producciones notables incluyen R.U.R., The Grass is Greener, The Wrong Side of the Park y Sleuth. En 1974, The Mousetrap, que había estado en cartelera en el Ambassador’s desde 1952, se trasladó al St. Martin’s. St Martin’s Theatre was designed by W. G. R. Sprague as one of a pair with the neighbouring Ambassadors Theatre on West Street. Richard Verney, 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, and B. A. (Bertie) Meyer commissioned both buildings. The Ambassadors opened in 1913, but the First World War delayed the St Martin’s, which finally opened on 23 November 1916 with the Edwardian musical comedy Houp La!, starring Gertie Millar and produced by Charles B. Cochran.

Later successes included R.U.R. with Basil Rathbone, The Grass is Greener, John Mortimer’s The Wrong Side of the Park and, in 1970, the thriller Sleuth. The theatre was Grade II listed in March 1973 and is still owned by the Willoughby de Broke family.

In March 1974 The Mousetrap transferred next door from the Ambassadors, where it had opened in 1952. It has played at St Martin’s ever since, making it the longest-running play in the world.

The Mousetrap (March 1974 -)

There are three shallow steps from the pavement to the foyer, where the box office is on the left. Wheelchair users enter via a removable ramp at the main entrance, and staff are on hand to help. There are two wheelchair spaces, one in Box C and one in the Dress Circle, and you can transfer to an aisle seat in the Dress Circle.

There are five steps to the back of the Dress Circle, with two steps between rows. The Stalls and Upper Circle are not suitable for patrons with walking difficulties, and there are no lifts. All bars are reached by stairs.

An adapted toilet is on the Dress Circle level, reached via the Tower Court entrance. An RF assistive listening system works on all three levels with a headset or a T-coil pendant (no Bluetooth). Captioned performances are offered on selected dates; ask the box office for upcoming ones. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome, and staff can dog sit by prior arrangement.
