Build in 1929 with an Art Deco style and a nautical themed interior, the Apollo Victoria opened on 15th October 1930. However, when it opened, it was called the New Victoria Cinema, showing a mixture of films and variety shows and moving into big band performances a couple of years later. In 1939, the cinema was chosen to present The Epsom Derby before closing in 1940 due to World War 2. Luckily, the building sustained minimal damage and it quickly reopened a year later.
After avoiding plans for demolition in the 1950s, and several years presenting ballet, films, and live entertainment, the theatre presented its final films in November 1975; a horror double bill of Legend of the Werewolf and Vampire Circus. 1981 marked the opening of the building as the Apollo Victoria. Productions on The Sound of Music, Camelot, and Fiddler on the Roof were all presented in the early 1980s, before the interior was heavily altered for Starlight Express. The modifications included a racetrack through the audience. Starlight Express ran for 18 years before the interior was restored and enhanced, creating the first auditorium completely lit with low power LED lights.
After productions of Bombay Dreams, Saturday Night Fever, and Movin’ Out, the theatre played host to Broadway smash hit Wicked in September 2006. The first eight performances broke ticket sale records, and in the seven years since it opened, it has grossed over £150 million.

For the best all-round view, aim for the centre Stalls, roughly the middle rows and towards the central aisle, where the wide stage sits square in front of you. If you want to be closer to the action, the front centre of the Dress Circle gives a panoramic view that captures the show's aerial moments. The Apollo Victoria seats around 2,300 people across just two levels, the Stalls and the Dress Circle.
| Level | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Stalls | Immersive, eye-level views from the centre rows | Very wide auditorium, so aim for the middle. Rear rows sit under the Circle overhang and lose the top of the stage. |
| Dress Circle | Panoramic sightlines and the full aerial staging | Front central rows are excellent. A safety rail affects some side seats, and the very back can feel distant and high. |
For Wicked, the centre Stalls around the middle rows give a clear, immersive view with the full width of the set in frame. If you want to take in the flying sequences and the Time Dragon above the proscenium, the front and centre of the Dress Circle is the standout spot, as it keeps the whole stage picture, including the height, comfortably in view.
The auditorium is unusually wide, so seats towards the far sides of either level give a side-on view and are best avoided if you can. In the Stalls, the rear rows sit under the Dress Circle overhang and lose the top of the staging, which matters for the show's aerial moments, while the very back rows are a long way from the stage. In the Dress Circle, a stair rail crosses the eyeline of some seats, so it is worth checking the seat map notes before you commit.
Some of the best value sits in the Stalls: restricted and side seats here are often cheaper yet can offer a better, closer view than similarly priced seats up in the Circle, and the rear Stalls stay unobstructed even if they are further back. If you are not sure which level suits you, our West End seating guide explains how the levels compare. Compare live prices and seat availability across every section at Wicked.

Watched Wicked and arguably one of the best shows we have watched! Absolutely flawless performance with standing ovation at the end. The theatre is fantastic and well equipped, and is tailored / themed inside to the latest events / shows. Great bars, seating was comfortable and easy to find - and the view was great no matter where you are sitting. Highly recommend watching Wicked, even if you’re not into theatre performances - the actors are great with plenty of humour thrown in. Great venue and vibes.
This is more a reflection of the theater than the production. The production was absolutely amazing and would go watch again. Unfortunately this theater is a far cry from good. The staff allowed a larger collective group of late people in around 25 without any though or consideration 10 15 min into the start. They also was always up and down the right side of the stalls isle near the toilets not asking other people to be quite and was generally quite dissapointed.
I went to see Wicked the musical and i strongly recommend going to see it! The actors were amazing, the song entertaining with a real orchestra! The decor and costums were also incredible! And also the building in itself is beautiful! Go see this musical!
We had an amazing time watching Wicked. Seats Stalls J40 and 41 were superb. There was only one moment in the show where we couldn't see clearly what was happening rear left, so more central seats would have prevented this. At the cost we paid for slightly off-centre, very pleased.

The best all-round seats are in the centre Stalls, around the middle rows and near the central aisle, where the wide stage sits directly in front of you. For the show's aerial sequences, the front and centre of the Dress Circle gives a panoramic view that keeps the full height of the staging in frame.
The auditorium is very wide, so seats towards the far sides of both levels get a side-on view. In the Stalls, the rear rows sit under the Dress Circle overhang and lose the top of the stage, and in the Dress Circle a stair rail crosses the eyeline of some seats, so check the seat map notes before booking.
The Apollo Victoria Theatre seats around 2,300 people, making it one of the larger West End houses. The seats are split across two levels, with roughly 1,300 in the Stalls and just over 1,000 in the Dress Circle.
There is step-free access from the street into the foyer, and wheelchair spaces are located at the ends of a row in the Dress Circle, reached by a platform lift operated by theatre staff. The Stalls are down several flights of stairs with no lift, so that level is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility. Book accessible seats in advance through the box office.
The Stalls tend to offer the best value, as restricted and side seats there are often cheaper yet can give a closer, better view than similarly priced seats in the Dress Circle. The rear Stalls also stay unobstructed even though they are further from the stage.
